Well-chosen defaults and excellent graphical network management tools combine to make Redhat Linux 7.1 Professional Edition a great choice for an out-of-the-box server installation. Redhat has produced a great Linux distribution. --Steve Patient Designed primarily for servers--and power users who want to experience every aspect of Linux--Redhat Linux 7.1 Professional Edition comes on 10 CDs (and one DVD). It includes all the latest software updates including Gnome 1.1 and KDE 2.1.1. Interestingly, a credit card-sized mini-disc called the Sysadmin Survival Disc is included and contains system recovery tools, though perhaps it should be called the survival rectangle. While not as good as those from SuSE, Redhat's paper documentation is better than most, and the Pro version includes an excellent customisation guide to NFS, Apache, BIND, Samba, SSH and other networking services. 7.1 Professional comes with all the software supplied with the Deluxe Edition, including StarOffice 5.2, demo Loki games, Workstation Applications and Source Code discs but also includes Linux Applications CD Server Edition containing commercial server tools and apps not included with the Deluxe Edition, as well as a developer archive CD. Though sysadmins can be expected to be technically inclined, the Professional Edition's automatic installation routines for server, workstation and laptop are identical to those in the Deluxe Edition. In practice, custom installation is also easy with excellent hardware detection and optional automatic security setup. Redhat does go the extra mile in automating as much as possible of the server setup process, you can't just install it and connect it to the Net or your local network. You will still need guidance. Much of it is available on the included Documentation disc. We'd recommend, though, a friendlier introduction such as Linux Network Administration Guide.
